Welcome to Equal Couples hosted by Anne & Carmen
Welcome to Equal Couples hosted by Anne Rankin Mahoney and Carmen Knudson-Martin. We are starting this blog as a way to connect with couples who are interested in creating equal relationships and with family professionals who are working with couples. Anne is a sociologist and gender and women’s studies professor from the University of Denver and Carmen directs the PhD program in Marriage and Family Therapy at Loma Linda University. We met twenty years ago when we happened to sit beside each other at a family conference we were both attending for the first time. You never know what will happen when you say “hi” to a stranger. We’ve been talking and writing together about couple relationships and gender ever since. We entered a whole new realm when we attended Deborah Siegel’s workshop on blogging at the April 2009 conference of the Council of Contemporary Families. Deborah got us so excited about this new form of communication that we decided we had to create a blog or our own. Thanks Deborah.
Our book Couples, Gender, and Power: Creating Change in Intimate Relationships came out in February 2009 (Springer Publishing). We see the book as the beginning of a much larger conversation about gender equality in couple relationships. We’re eager to learn about your experiences and ideas and what kind of equality issues are coming up in your lives. Anne & Carmen
